Hair Restoration Q & A
Is hair shedding normal?
You typically shed about 100 hairs daily because hair follicles go through growth cycles. On any given day, about 90% of your follicles are actively growing hair. The others are in a transitional or resting phase.
When a follicle enters a resting phase, the hair falls out; then a new hair grows when the follicle returns to a growth phase.
What causes hair loss?
You can lose hair from an underlying medical condition and hormonal changes, but the most common type of hair loss is inherited. This balding is called androgenetic alopecia, or male-pattern and female-pattern baldness.
Inherited hair loss occurs when a hormone accumulates in hair follicles, which shortens the growth phase and shrinks hair follicles. The follicle gradually grows shorter, weaker hairs until it stops growing new hair.
How are lasers used to restore hair?
The team at Avante Laser & MediSpa use the Sunetics Laser, which is FDA-cleared to safely and effectively treat hair loss. It uses low-level laser therapy to stimulate hair follicles to restore hair growth.
Laser treatment increases blood circulation, boosting the nutrients and oxygen supply while removing the harmful hormones. As a result, hair follicles begin to regrow normal-sized hairs.
Sunetics Laser treatment is pain-free and only takes about 20 minutes per session. On average, most patients see results in about six months.
How is hair loss treated using platelet-rich plasma (PRP)?
PRP, which is made on-site from your blood, contains plasma with a high concentration of platelets. Platelets contain growth factors that promote healing by triggering new tissue to grow.
When PRP is injected into areas of your scalp affected by hair loss, the growth factors stimulate hair follicles to grow new hair. PRP treatment effectively increases the number of new hairs and slows down hair loss.
Which other hair restoration options are available?
Your provider at Avante Laser & MediSpa may prescribe supplements to restore hair growth or a laser cap that delivers low-level laser therapy you can wear at home.
In some cases, surgery is the best option. The most effective type of surgery, called follicular unit extraction, removes a sliver of healthy hair follicles, separates the individual follicular units, then transplants them into balding areas.
