PRP Q & A
What makes platelets so beneficial?
Platelets are naturally present in your blood, where they form blood clots that stop bleeding after you’re cut or injured. They have another vital job though: they’re essential for healing.
Platelets contain proteins called growth factors. When your body needs to heal or regenerate tissue, growth factors stimulate new cell growth, producing all the different types of tissues needed to restore health.
How are PRP injections used?
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is effective for cosmetic procedures because it helps your body produce collagen, fatty tissue, blood vessels and other tissues that strengthen and support your skin.
Your provider can target problem areas like wrinkles, scars and balding regions by using a fine needle to inject PRP. They can also infuse your skin with PRP using SkinPen microneedling, which creates microscopic channels that absorb PRP beneath the skin’s surface.
When PRP injections are used for cosmetic purposes, they’re often called vampire procedures, such as the Vampire Facelift®.
How is PRP produced?
PRP consists of plasma that contains a higher concentration of platelets than what’s typically present in your blood. However, PRP is made on-site using your blood alone, so you don’t need to worry about compatibility or allergic reactions.
Your nurse draws a small amount of your blood, then places it in a centrifuge. The centrifuge rapidly spins the blood, separating platelets from the other solid components. Your Avante Laser and MediSpa provider then removes the platelets and plasma for your PRP injection.
What should you expect during a PRP procedure?
After your PRP is ready to go, the length of your session depends on the size of your treatment area. Everyone’s sensitivity is different; you may want an anesthetic ointment or local anesthesia for your comfort.
Regenerating tissue and growing collagen take a little time, and change occurs gradually as new tissues replace old skin. You should see optimal skin renewal within a few months.
